It becomes a painful duty to chronicle the death of one who has chronicled many deaths. John Oliver Demette, editor of the Morning Record, died at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, at his home at the corner of Main and High streets, after a painful and lingering illness.
His condition had been critical for several days, and the end was not unanticipated, but was none the less grievous to his faithful wife and daughter.
Mr. Demette was of French parentage, but was born in St. Louis November 12, 1860. His mother died when he was 2 years old and his father when he was 4. He was raised by his aunt, Mrs. Adeline Mueller, of this place, and lived here nearly all of his life.
He was married sixteen years ago to Miss Emma Schroeppel. She survives him with one daughter, Olivia, 12 years old.
He was formerly city editor of the NEWS DEMOCRAT, and for the past five years has been the editor of the Morning Record.
He was a clever writer and a companiable member of the fraternity. His death is deeply regretted by his late newspaper associates, and by all with whom he came in contact.
He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and of the Court of Honor.
The funeral will probably take place Sunday.
