Late Sunday afternoon, Ernest Allen, who was confined in the county jail for lunacy, committed suicide by cutting his throat with a pocket knife.
About three weeks ago, Allen was before the Police Court upon a charge of disorderly conduct and was fined heavily. In default of bail, he was put on the streets to work, and after two days it was shown that he was not of sound mind and was then placed in the county jail to await an opening in the asylum.
Sunday afternoon his brother went down to see him and carried him some apples. After taking the fruit he asked for a knife to peel them, which was refused. In a short time another young man went to the jail to see a friend, and being asked by Allen for the loan of a knife, granted the request. In a few moments, the brother of Allen was told of the matter and asked if there was any danger to be apprehended. He thought not, but said it would be hard to get him to return the knife. They went to the cell and asked for the knife and were refused. The turnkey was then called and as he came to the door, Allen made a slash at his throat. The door was unlocked as quickly as possible, but before any one could get to him, the unfortunate man had cut his throat from ear to ear, and made an effort to cut the turnkey, who had to ward him off with a "chair A physician was called, who attempted to atop the flow of blood, but Allen survived only about forty minutes.
Mr Allen was about 35 years old, and was reared in the Fourth District, being a grandson of Capt Robert Payne.
After the body was prepared for burial, it was taken to the home of Joe Allen beyond Greenwood Cemetery. Today it was taken to his old home near Oakwood for interment.
