James followed his oldest brother, Sampson Westfall, to California after their father died suddenly in West Virginia. The two young men came to be near their father's brother, Joel Westfall. They were later joined by their mother, Martha Jane (Zickafoose) Westfall, and another brother, the Rev. Charles Kuykendall Westfall and two of their three sisters, Sarah (Mrs. William Thomas Nutter) and Malinda Jane, (Mrs. Davidson). My great grandmother, Mary Catherine, Mrs. Charles Wesley Elliott, was the only child to stay in West Virginia besides a brother, Eldridge G. who was born June 20, 1867 and died April 9, 1869.
