An avid golfer, he joined the FAA in 1965 as an air traffic controller, retiring in 1992. Survivors include: his wife, Arlene; a daughter, Kitti Rollie of Tucson, Ariz.; three sons, John of Puyallup, Wash, Joseph (Susan) of San Anselmo, Calif, and Michael of Bellingham; nine grandchildren; a brother, Donald (Darlene) of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two sisters, Janice (Edice) Blankenship-Smith of Nashville, Tenn, and Shirley (Dale) Winkey of Shell Rock; and his aunt, Marge Smith Chandler of Plainfied, who helped raise him. In addition, Janice is survived by two daughters, Karen and Kathy Blankenship; three grandchildren, Kristin Poppe, Evan (Ashley) Stamey and Katy Poppe, and one Nashville niece, Nancy Cartwright. She is also survived by four step-sons, Larry (Diane) Smith, Rand (Beth) Smith, Jeff (Ann) Smith and Marty (Pam) Smith, and thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren (Olivia & William Smith Olsen and Raleigh Fisher), whom she adored.
