Maria was the daughter of Hans Jansen Van Nordstrand, who wed Reymerig Volkert and lived at Nordstrand Island in present Germany. They had three children; Jan, Simon, and Marretje (Maria). Shortly after Marretje's birth in 1636, the family came to America and Hans took up farming at Amersfoort (Brooklyn) on Long Island. Reymerig died soon thereafter and Hans married Jannetje Van Leeuwen at New Utrecht, Long Island. They had seven children. Marretje was eventually bound out to a tavern keeper at Fort Orange (Albany, NY) and in 1653, at the age of seventeen, wed Juriaen Westfall. In 1654, Juriaen and others moved to the Esopus Creek area to establish a settlement.
